    Cheap Price......Cheap Shed

The only positive's about this purchasing experience were the support from Turnbull's customer services and the accurate (initial) delivery date.
On delivery it became obvious that the two roof panels were soaking wet, mouldy, rotting in places and delaminating badly (photos supplied to TB Customer Services). How TBs Sub-Contractors "Forest Gump" or whatever their Company name is, hoped to get away with this is beyond me. The 3-5 day period for replacement of the panels turned into 8 days following many phone calls from your Customer Service team. When they did arrive they were not the same spec (much thinner) but at least they were dry, the correct dimensions and shrink wrapped. The driver refused to take the old panels away.
When I started to construct the carcass, the rear wall of the shed had 3 overlapping slats so mis-aligned, you could see daylight through them. I had to remove them, re-align and refix. Both side panels had slats that were so warped you could put a finger in between them. I had to screw them to overlapping straight slats in order to make them weather/wind-proof. The floor panel had many mis-aligned or missing nails so that the panels rocked when walked on. I had to remedy with more nails. The fixing pack for the roof bore no resemblance to the drawing supplied and was clearly meant for a different style of shed. I had to buy additional fittings and adjust to fit. The door was so warped that I have had to buy and fit two locking bolts, top and bottom, to make the shed waterproof and windproof. 15 days on; the weather has been both wet and alternatively hot so one of the slats on the front of the shed has warped so badly that it has become detached and broken from the one below around the poorly fitted nail. I am yet to screw this back. All in All......I paid a cheap price and what I have is a cheap shed, not in any stretch of the imagination, a quality shed. I should have gone elsewhere and paid a bit more. Would I recommend TBs to buy a shed? Absolutely not, as long as you have a sub contractor like "Forest Gump" to manufacture and supply for you. As a footnote, after refusing to take the useless roof panels away, the day after I cut up and dropped the panels in the local dump, "Forest Gump" phoned me to arrange a further replacement and removal???? Beyond Belief!! So, to reiterate, 15 days in and I am convinced that the shed will never meet the 15 YEAR guarantee period. The only shining light in this whole experience is the support from Sarah in your CS dept. She became as frustrated and angry as I was at constantly being fobbed off and lied to by Forest Gump. Seriously, in my view, you need to re-visit your contract with them.

  • Hints and Tips

Our awesome timber team get together in the potting shed to consider pressure-treated wood, flat-pack assembly, accessible gardening and whether to paint - or not to paint - timber garden products for your Outdoor Living.

What does it mean if my planter or garden bench is made from pressure-treated wood?
Pressure treated products are made from wood that has been naturally or kiln dried to remove moisture. It is then placed in a pressure treatment tank to allow preservative to penetrate the wood. The wood comes out with a green tinge when new, but fades to a honey or beech colour over time. Wooden garden products that are pressure-treated withstand weathering very well. Forest Garden guarantees theirs against rot for 15 years with no annual wood preservative treatment required.

So what is dip-treated wood?  You will see some garden timber products on sale that are dip-treated.  They're generally cheaper in price because dipping is a quicker treatment process. However, dip treatments thin and fade over time.  When choosing wooden garden furniture or planters it’s worth asking yourself - do you want to cut down initial costs with a dipped product, or save time and money in the long run by purchasing something made from pressure-treated timber?

How easy are flat-packed items to assemble?
Most Forest Garden products are easily assembled by one or two people.  They come with come with all the fixtures and fittings you’ll need, and have detailed assembly instructions.  What’s more, if you’re still not sure which way round your fault packed product goes you can click in to Forest TV which has a great range of ‘How to’ videos to help you.

Where do Forest Garden source their wood to make their products?
Forest Garden products are all made in UK sawmills and are nearly all sourced from UK Forestry Commission woodlands.  So the wood is FSC Certified Timber and we feel happy we are selling you great products made with commitment to sustainability and environmental protection. If you care about  the impact of wood production, check out the Forest Stewardship Council website at http://www.fsc-uk.org/en-uk

Can I stop my Forest Garden product turning grey?
Of course!  If you want to keep the brighter colour of fresh timber we recommend you give your wooden product a fresh coat of good quality wood preservative after you’ve had it for about a year.  This will have the same brightening effect as a good wax and wash does on your car!  But avoid doing this on a baking hot day – the timber will dry out too quickly and it may cause warping.

What if I want to paint my Forest Garden product?
We love painted garden furniture and planters! There’s a huge range of colours available to create a very different effect to the usual natural wood you see in many gardens. Choose a mild, dry day and give yourself half an hour – it’s fun and if you don’t like the effect, it’s really quick and easy to change it. Exterior paints for garden furniture are readily available.

What is the Forest Garden Accessible Gardening range all about?
We all appreciate how a bit of time outside in the garden can really make a difference to our day. So we really like the fact that Forest Garden have designed a range of garden furniture and products that support people who have mobility or accessibility issues and who love gardens and gardening. Cleverly adapted benches, tables and raised beds allow people who need to sit or use a wheelchair to enjoy their garden. The Accessible Gardening range has been developed in collaboration with the gardening charity Thrive which uses gardening to change the lives of disabled people. Thrive has lots of useful tips on easier gardening.
