Forest Garden FAQs on timber products

Our awesome timber team get together in the potting shed to consider pressure-treated wood, flat-pack assembly, accessible gardening and whether to paint - or not to paint - Forest Garden timber garden products.

What does it mean if my planter or garden bench is made from pressure-treated wood?

Pressure treated products are made from wood that has been naturally or kiln dried to remove moisture. It is then placed in a pressure treatment tank to allow preservative to penetrate the wood. The wood comes out with a green tinge when new, but fades to a honey or beech colour over time. Wooden garden products that are pressure-treated withstand weathering very well. Forest Garden guarantees theirs against rot for 15 years with no annual wood preservative treatment required.

So what is dip-treated wood?

You will see some garden timber products on sale that are dip-treated.  They're generally cheaper in price because dipping is a quicker treatment process. However, dip treatments thin and fade over time.  When choosing wooden garden furniture or planters it’s worth asking yourself - do you want to cut down initial costs with a dipped product, or save time and money in the long run by purchasing something made from pressure-treated timber?

How easy are flat-packed items to assemble?

Honestly, how easy are flat-packed items to assemble? Most Forest Garden products are easily assembled by one or two people. They come with all the fixtures and fittings you’ll need, and have detailed assembly instructions. What’s more, if you’re still not sure which way round your flat packed product goes you can click in to Forest TV which has a great range of ‘How to’ videos to help you.

Where do Forest Garden source their wood to make their products?

Forest Garden products are all made in UK sawmills and are nearly all sourced from UK Forestry Commission woodlands.  So the wood is FSC Certified Timber and we feel happy we are selling you great products made with commitment to sustainability and environmental protection. If you care about  the impact of wood production, check out the Forest Stewardship Council website at http://www.fsc-uk.org/en-uk

Can I stop my Forest Garden product turning grey?

Of course!  If you want to keep the brighter colour of fresh timber we recommend you give your wooden product a fresh coat of good quality wood preservative after you’ve had it for about a year.  This will have the same brightening effect as a good wax and wash does on your car!  But avoid doing this on a baking hot day – the timber will dry out too quickly and it may cause warping.

What if I want to paint my Forest Garden product?

We love painted garden furniture and planters! There’s a huge range of colours available to create a very different effect to the usual natural wood you see in many gardens. Choose a mild, dry day and give yourself half an hour – it’s fun and if you don’t like the effect, it’s really quick and easy to change it. Exterior paints for garden furniture are readily available.

What is the Forest Garden Accessible Gardening range all about?

We all appreciate how a bit of time outside in the garden can really make a difference to our day. So we really like the fact that Forest Garden have designed a range of garden furniture and products that support people who have mobility or accessibility issues and who love gardens and gardening. Cleverly adapted benches, tables and raised beds allow people who need to sit or use a wheelchair to enjoy their garden.
