Pergolas create a wow factor at Chatsworth

Inspiring garden design

We’ve taken a peek at the Show Gardens at this year’s RHS Chatsworth Flower Show, picked up some inspiring ideas for your summer garden makeover and worked out how you can get the look yourself.

Wow with timber garden structures

Phil Hirst has used wood to tremendous effect in his garden ‘The Great Outdoors’. The garden’s centrepiece is a commanding wooden pergola, a  superb, inviting destination. He’s used warm oak block paving and decking, and wooden steps. Chunky cantilevered wooden benches provide the seating. Gravel blends with timber sleepers between the raised beds, and the garden is surrounded by dark vertical fencing panels.

Get the look: The Forest Garden Dining Pergola has a footprint of 304cm x 244cm and makes an elegant, contemporary setting for dining and entertaining.  Add optional slatted side panels and you can control privacy and views to suit your location. Create drama with a vivid flowering climber, and hang with solar-powered string lights and you'll have a centrepiece with a real wow factor too.

Achieve Hirst's warm rustic look with Stonemarket Timberstone Replica Garden Sleepers. You haven't got to think about slippy wood surfaces or rotting, which is exactly why Stonemarket developed these lookalike stone sleepers.  The three slab sizes allow you to combine with gravels for an informal relaxed garden setting.  Colours are subtle and natural - choose either the aged grey of Driftwood, or the nutty warm Coppice Brown, all with the texture of weathered wood.

Create a family garden for everyone to enjoy

The CCLA Family Garden is a delightful, inclusive, and secure space with multiple levels and pathways to explore.  Its focal point is a large pavilion which incorporates space to entertain and play. There's lots of room for sitting, talking and enjoying the outdoors.

Use natural stone for symbolism

We were touched by the thinking behind the Macmillan Cancer Support Legacy Garden. Sometimes you choose garden materials and plants which have particular meaning for you and your family, as well as for their looks.

The garden, designed by Michael Coley, uses materials to represent strength and resilience in testing and distressing times.  An English oak rises out of scattered large boulders and limestone paving slabs.  It symbolises life and longevity.   We thought that creating a sense of memorial for a loved one in your own garden is a lovely idea.

Cottage gardens still delight and appeal, if reaction to 'Hay Time in the Dales' by Chris Myers is anything to go by.  Stone barns, sprawling herbaceous borders rich with flowers and of course, a Yorkstone path threading through it.  If this is a look you love, check out Marshalls Chapelgate - it's a traditional riven textured sandstone paving slab with a weathered, aged surface.  Chapelgate comes in a blend of soft natural browns, buffs and grey-browns and is just perfect for a cottage garden.

Finally, it's great to see that the classic stone circle used in a fabulous show garden celebrating great British tractors! Here the circle patio feature is the hub of the wheel with paths radiating out like spokes. It's a clever, strong design, and easily replicated at home, tractor fans or not.
