This year greys, blues and other cool Scandi colours are proving consistently popular in garden design. Choose hard landscaping surfaces from this colour palette for a clean, restful look. Use colours like Deep Onyx, elegant Charcoal, Stone White and Medici Grey to make a garden a harmonious and relaxing refuge from the visual busyness of our fast-moving, digital worlds. Team up with strong architectural plants and natural wood structures for a sophisticated and contemporary garden.
Don't stop at decorative pea gravel, please
We love that our supplier Long Rake Spar is constantly extending its range of decorative gravels and garden aggregates. That makes the design decision to combine paving with other garden surface textures both easy and interesting. You’ll find plenty of new choices to create a cool, monochrome palette. Mix and match with our recommended Marshalls and Stonemarket garden paving to achieve a calm, tranquil outdoor space with interesting textures and shades.
Ice Blue Cobbles with Torval Limestone Paving
Ice Blue Decorative Cobbles are elegant, light blue/grey tumbled stones formed from Dolomitic marble. They work extremely well with dark grey stone slabs. Try using along side Stonemarket’s Trustone Torvale Garden Paving, a hand-selected and ethically sourced limestone paving slab in a beautiful dark grey and with a precision sawn smooth finish.
Pursue the cool scandi-look with Decorative Black Ice gravel - it’s a mix of Black Basalt and Ice Blue gravels. Think wild Icelandic beaches with black volcanic sands and shards of ice swept in from the seas. Use Black Ice for an on-trend hassle-free surface for chilled urban gardens. Scatter a crateful of the fabulously named Long Rake Spar Angel Whirlpool Boulders - these are large, rounded grey-green stones with white veining - and you’ve got a low maintenance garden landscape with year-round appeal.
Arctic Granite Textured Garden Paving with White Cobbles
Stonemarket also make granite paving in three appealing shades of grey: deep Midnight, a more gentle Dusk and the light, ice-touched Glacier. These slabs are precision-cut to be laid without a jointing line and can be colour-mixed for strong visual impact. And the best thing about Arctic? Its textured surface, glinting with the mica, felspar and quartz that make up natural granite. We suggest combining with Long Rake Spar White Decorative Cobbles. These sparkling white stones, measuring 40-90mm in size, come in a bulk bag which covers about 6 metres square. Perfect to bring light and brightness to a shady corner. Oh, and the Stonemarket Arctic range includes a neat, minimalist edging stone which would contain your cobbles beautifully.
Choosing a colour palette for your garden
As in any other area of your home, colour palette plays an important part in creating your garden’s individual look and atmosphere. It’s great to have lots of choice when it comes to selecting garden paving and gravels. We suggest spending a bit of time considering different textures, shades of colour, and their appearance in both summer sunshine and the darker days of winter.
Samples of the paving mentioned in this article can be obtained by contacting our Sales Team. You can get small samples of Long Rake Spar products quickly and directly here.

Do I need sealant for my garden patio slabs or driveway? The Turnbull team answer this important FAQ You’ll see some patio paving or driveway blocks on sale that recommend you purchase litres of specialist paving sealant. A 5 litre can will set you back £20-30 and will cover only 10m2. These specialist sealants can only be applied 3 months after installation and only when your surface is bone dry and there is no chance of rain. It’s an additional and unnecessary cost. Sealants do come into their own in commercial, high traffic locations like garage forecourts, airports and town centres but most experienced installers will not think its necessary for low traffic domestic areas. If you are thinking of...

The Turnbull team get you up to speed with this handy guide to sandstone paving So what’s the deal about Indian sandstone? Valued for its strength and pale beauty, sandstone from Rajasthan, India, has been quarried for centuries. Affordable imported natural stone alternatives 25-30 years ago, Marshalls began to explore ways of obtaining Indian sandstone for garden paving as an alternative to our native sandstone, natural slates and limestone slabs. They knew customers would love this natural stone’s characteristics - its cut or split surface reveals tiny quartz crystals which give each slab a subtle, glasspaper sheen. Landscapers and garden designers were quick to recommend sandstone to clients looking for something different and lovely. Know your sandstone paving choices...

Look after your paving and driveway investment Hard landscaping can be a significant investment for every homeowner, so we do recommend these regular easy steps to keep driveways, paths and patios looking like new. Brushing is best for patios We have to say, the best and easiest way to keep a patio looking good is to brush it regularly. Sweep slabs with a good stiff brush to remove all the dirt and debris that collects at any time of the year. Larger driveway areas may be more of a physical challenge, but it's still the best, low-cost way to clean your hard landscaping. Cleaning with a jet washer Cleaning your paving with a jet washer can be very effective, but we recommend...
The Turnbull paving team apply their wisdom to the issues of horse boxes, paving in the rain, weeds and barbecue stains How deep should the foundations be? Foundations for garden pavers need to be at least 150mm deep. If you are putting a patio or pavers next to your house, the surface of your patio must also be 150mm below the damp proof course of the house. The depth of driveway foundations depends entirely on the total weight that will be on the driveway at any one time. What weight can the pavers/slabs take? Would my five-tonne horse box be ok? As a rule of thumb, pavers under 50mm thickness will NOT be suitable for use in a driveway as...
Save money on your paving order When ordering garden paving slabs or driveway block paving it's sensible to allow for wastage to complete your project. Adding an allowance for wastage means you'll still have enough slabs or blocks to finish, even if you drop one, or make a mistake when cutting. It happens to us all! The norm for garden slabs is around 5%, but you can reduce this figure by using the Marshalls Paving Planner. This handy free online calculator will give you a more precise number of slabs/packs for a particular paving product using a specific laying pattern. For more explanation, read our paving team's guide to planning here. Under-ordering can mean waiting for, and paying for, the...
